The ongoing rehabilitation of the north quay of the port of Funchal will be completed in the summer of 2010. The area is being converted into an area of entertainment and leisure, an intervention designed by the architectural studio Risk, headed by architect Tomás Salgado and promoted by the Metropolitan Development Society (MDS). The investment is 15 million.

Pedro Ferreira account that "the master plan determined that the northern part would be for the leisure and entertainment, while the Government responsible for implementing the SMD of the physical work." To realize the ideas proposed for the seafront, the SMD chose the architectural firm of Risk, coordinated by the architect Tomás Salgado. The choice was related to the extensive work already done by the firm in the field of urban planning. "We get a good urban and developed the project with the generic functions provided in the master plan, introducing an innovation in connection Avenue Sá Carneiro, allowing even more people enjoy the beauty and the proximity of the sea, when touring the coastline" , says the chairman of the SMD. The marginal area of intervention of the port of Funchal is extended over more than 20 thousand m2. Will be born here a silo for parking with about 500 seats and above it will extend the square of the sea. This will contain the middle two floors removed, will be installed where the spaces of entertainment and leisure, with shops, bars, restaurant, etc..
The avenue Sá Carneiro, the area overlooking the sea, will be expanded and redefined, with the deployment of broad walks and green areas. The aim is to create spaces for pedestrian enjoyment of citizens, providing greater proximity to the sea. And this is an area for boating excellence, support services available to these activities, will remain located here. "This project will transform a landscape work of great disruption and is a port, a very green landscape, ample space and huge supply of entertainment, perfectly integrated in the landscape," notes Pedro Ferreira. From simple lines, the building is framed to create the landscape of the island and in view of its rugged nature, special care was placed on roofs of buildings. "We had to worry that all that was built almost not see. The buildings, by their shape and color, will be dimmed and almost hidden in the cliff located behind the future construction," notes the president of the SMD. This will be an area of quality, designed for the citizen and giving it a greater connection to the sea.
